World class Aviva Stadium to be home of Heineken Cup final 2013 as record number of rugby fans flock to Dublin for sports holidays

DUBLIN’S AVIVA Stadium has been named as the “world class” sports venue to host the 2013 Heineken Cup final. It will be the first time in 10 years the final game of the tournament returns to Ireland.

More than 600,000 European rugby fans alone have flocked to the Aviva since it opened a year ago and the home of Irish rugby is now deemed “world class” alongside the Cardiff Millennium and Twickenham stadiums.

Aviva Stadium, above, is just over half an hour from another top Irish landmark, Firstlight The K Club The decision by European Rugby Cup organisers to bring the Heineken Cup final back to Dublin in 2013 will also be great for Ireland, says Irish Rugby Football Union boss Philip Browne.

“It was important for the stadium that it would get this opportunity to host the pinnacle game of European club rugby and this is not only good news for the game in this country, but also for Dublin,” he said.

Coming to Ireland for sports? Fractional ownership could be the ideal way to own a holiday home and only pay for when you use it

“It is estimated that rugby contributes over €200m to the Irish economy, and this year’s Ireland-England Six Nations game generated just over €51m to the Dublin economy. While the financial benefits are particularly strong, the prestige and exposure for the game in this country are just as powerful, and in hosting the first Heineken Cup final since 2003, I am sure that Irish rugby and the city of Dublin will deliver yet another memorable occasion.”

The Heineken Cup final was last held in Dublin’s Lansdowne Road in 2003 and Irish teams have won it four times in the past six seasons – Leinster were crowned champions in 2011. Aviva Stadium visitors also surpassed the 600,000 mark for European matches.

Derek McGrath, head of the ERC, said: “The Aviva Stadium is a world-class venue which has quickly established a close affinity with the Heineken Cup having staged three matches last season.”

Gerry Breen, Lord Mayor of Dublin said: “We look forward to welcoming the finalists and fans to Dublin’s Aviva Stadium in 2013 for the Heineken Cup final. It will give us a great opportunity to showcase the many delights that are Dublin.”
